Former AAG President Rob Bowell (left) presenting AAG Regional Councilor Theo Davies (right) with 230 kg of rocks, fossils, minerals, texbooks, and journals (foreground) at Heathrow airport. The materials, tbe used by Davies and colleagues at the Department of Geology and Mining, University of Jos (Nigeria), include a complete set of JGE and GEEA through 2005 and Explore, donated by Robert van Tassel, a retired AAG member. This photo was taken near the village of Axylou in Cyprus. In the background are the famous Troodos Mountains. I (David Cohen) am currently leading a project with Neil Rutherford and the Cyprus Geological Survey Department (GSD) to develop a Geochemical Atlas of Cyprus. Over the last eight months, we have collected nearly 10,000 soil samples, as well as blowing up one engine, stripping two gear boxes and having one vehicle recovered from a creek by a large backhoe, as our teams cover one of the roughest 4-wheel-drive terrains in Europe. We generally avoid Wednesdays and Sundays in the field as these are the hunting days in Cyprus. Olle Selinus and Bob Eppinger in the beautiful home of professor Xie Xuejing, the AAG gold award medalist, in Beijing in September 2006. Professor Xie Xuejing is more active than ever despite his age, a proof of the longevity of the Chinese! Photo taken in September, 2006 Provided by Bob Eppinger |
Beth McClenaghan (editor of the AAG's EXPLORE Newsletter) and student assistant Gabby Budulan (University of Ottawa) collecting till samples for a Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) - Canadian Ministry Industry Research Organization (CAMIRO) indicator mineral case study around Ni deposits in the Thompson Nickel Belt, northern Manitoba, Canada. Gwendy Hall in West Bengal, village of Gotra, 2005. Gwendy is working on a joint Geological Survey of Canada-Geological Survey of India project with the ultimate goal being to try to predict which wells are likely to be contaminated with As. Thousands of people are affected by drinking water which contains high As. The study includes As speciation of well waters at different depths, sediment chemistry, and determination of redox conditions (more reducing, more As liberated from the sediments). Olle Selinus in New Zealand in december 2004 after having another successful short course in medical geology in Perth, Australia and invited lectures in New Zealand. Since 2001 this course has been held in 35 countries all over the world and thousands of geoscientists and medics have attended the course. (www.medicalgeology.org) After all this work there is time for vacations and relaxing in the volcanic areas of New Zealand! Photo taken in December, 2004 Provided by Olle Selinus |

AAG councilor David Lentz (UNB) with 3 of Prof. K. Yang’s graduate students at the famous Seokguram Grotto and Bulguksa Temple (UNESCO World Heritage Site) in southeastern South Korea, after a long day in the field visiting skarns, serpentinites, and carbonatites. David Lentz was in South Korea in mid December (2006) for a sponsored lecture tour at Pusan National University (PNU) and KIGAM. His lectures were focused at various magmatic hydrothermal systems. Dave wishes to thank the geoscience researchers at both PNU and KIGAM for their awesome hospitality (including Sojo) and generosity during his visit and to the many eager graduate students he met, while visiting the beautiful & cultured country. Rob Bowell in front of the Schubert glacier in Greenland, at the Malmbjerg molybdenum deposit, Greenland. Photo taken in July, 2006, "about the only time there is a blue sky in eastern Greenland and you do not need ear protectors!" Rob is the geochemist for the project, working on both exploration and environmental geochemistry issues and involved in mine planning. Provided by David Lentz and Rob Bowell |

Bob Eppinger running Hance Rapid in the Grand Canyon, Arizona, in June, 2006. An avid whitewater enthusiast for 35 years, Bob has managed on occasion to blend river running with geochemistry fieldwork in the western U.S. This trip was purely recreational—a delightful 18-day float with his 16 year-old daughter Rose (in the blue hat). |
Thomas Molyneux and Mr Behnam Mehraban at rock engravings at Ernam Mountain in Yazd Province, Central Iran. The long horned animals reportedly are wild? goats. There is some information on the engravings on The Internet under Ernam Mountain Yazd. Tom was recently working on an exploration project in Iran. www.persian_goldplc.com |
