Cliff Stanley, 2025 Gold Medal

In recognition of his exceptional contributions to the scientific field of applied geochemistry and mathematical geology, and his exemplary service in promoting the exchange of ideas and the dissemination of information in these fields through a distinguished career in university teaching and research.
Professor Cliff Stanley has been a pillar of excellence in both research and education of all things related to geochemistry, consistently advancing the geosciences while cultivating the next generation of leaders in the field. His passion for scientific rigor, robust measurements and innovation, and professional service sets him apart as an outstanding member of our community. Although much of his research has been based out of Acadia University in Canada, he has collaborated globally, taking a great deal of time to train industry and others in working through the many challenges related to lithogeochemistry and the application of mathematical geology to better understand rock composition, alteration and resource estimation. He has particularly focused on element ratios and statistics related to nugget effects of gold. All of which were at the forefront of the scientific world and have had a significant impact on the field of geochemistry. His publication record includes 57 refereed journal articles, 9 special proceeding papers, and 30 short course guidebooks—resources that are widely used across academia and industry. He has secured over $2 million in research funding and has shared his findings through more than 100 conference presentations and over 100 poster contributions. Perhaps a greater impact is his extensive efforts to deliver short courses and invited guest lectures, globally.
Professor Stanley has taught hundreds of undergraduate and graduate students, inspiring many to pursue successful careers in geoscience. His mentorship record is exceptional: he has supervised 11 M.Sc. students, 31 honours students, and co-supervised an additional 31 (Ph.D., M.Sc., Hon.) students through collaborations with other universities. Many of these graduates have achieved senior roles in the mineral exploration industry, a testament to his ability to develop practical skills, critical thinking, and scientific independence in his students.
